Interrogating Anaesthetic machine logs can give a clear picture of N2O usage by a given machine. The cumulative gas usage can be reset and then periodically reviewed to allow clear consumption data, per anaesthetic machine, for a given period. The way to detect N2O consumption from 2 popular anaesthetic machines is outlined below.
GE Aysis Cs2
Of the GE machines, Only the Aysis machines have the required data.
Can only reset the machine when not in use and will need to turn off once finished so therefore do when machine is free i.e. after the list has finished.
How to Interrogate the Machine
- Home screen: select system setup
- Select super user password and enter three number codes provided by your local GE Rep. This will stop flow from the machine so can not be connected to a patient.
- Select gas usage
- Select cumulative gas usage
- Select reset usage.
- Select back.
- Exit super user mode which will require you to switch off the machine.
- Return at pre-determined time: repeat steps 1-4. Nitrous oxide use since the reset date will be displayed.

Draeger Zeus
Of the Draeger machines, only the Zeus machines have the required data.
Can only reset the machine when not in use and will need to reboot once it is done therefore do it when machine is free i.e. after list has finished.
How to Interrogate the Machine
- On main screen in standby mode select Biomed Service.
- Select basic settings.
- Input password (check with your local Draeger Rep for this password)
- Select more settings (top right tab).
- Select total consumption (bottom tab right hand side of screen.)
- Select reset button on bottom of screen. Confirm with rotatory knob.
- Exit screen by pressing X in the top right corner. Will need to restart the machine to confirm changes.
- Return at pre-determined time: repeat steps 1-5. Nitrous oxide use since the reset date will be displayed
